The United States Sentencing Commission is looking for a self-motivated, dedicated, and all-around Information Technology Specialist to assist in the daily Information Technology needs of the agency, as well as long term planning for future growth. This position requires a balance of knowledge, ingenuity, and ability with an emphasis on security and performance.

Duties

The incumbent will serve as one of the Office of Technology's (OT) Technical Services team members, primarily providing software, hardware, and user support for the Commission. The incumbent reports directly to the Senior Information Technology Specialist. Responsibilities include: Providing first-line technical support to Commission staff at all levels by diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues on desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices, printers, scanners, monitors, and peripherals in a Windows environment. Performing routine hardware maintenance, upgrades, configuration, and reconfiguration of desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices, printers, scanners, monitors, and peripherals. Providing technical support for conference rooms, conference room technology, and attendees. This includes coordinating with AV contractors regarding maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrade, and training for general conference room support, as well as maintaining operational backup device for conference room control panel via an iPad, coordinating with the Administrative Offices of U.S. Courts (AOUSC) AV team in support of live streaming events (both inside the Commission suite and events hosted elsewhere in the building), and offering necessary assistance with the development of new conference room projects. Managing VoIP desktop phones by working with AOUSC technicians to keep desktop phones up to date, while providing necessary training on how to use VoIP phones. Assisting with onboarding of new Commission users to ensure both functionality of hardware and adaptation of various applications, systems, and services essential to Commission operations are operational. Conducting regular audit and asset inventory of any change and/or update on desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices, printers, scanners, monitors, peripherals, and other miscellaneous computer supplies (e.g., toners, cartridges, cables, thumb drives, screen protectors, laptop batteries, power adapters, etc.) to fully account for these items. Maintaining and organizing cables and jacks used for office and cubicle configuration. Working in unison with the Technical Infrastructure team to ensure network connectivity throughout the Commission suite, through maintenance and configuration of network cabling between the switch to the physical data ports. Facilitating compliance with all applicable security policies, guidelines, and procedures by participating in security vulnerability assessment and providing mitigation on desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices, printers, scanners, and peripherals. Managing Commission's scanning devices and the automated National Fax (NFAX) service. Handling the shipment, receipt, movement, and disposal of IT equipment and peripherals. Assisting with evaluation, test, and implementation of new operating systems, off-the-shelf and locally developed software, workstation hardware, and mobile devices and related software. Lifting and moving of moderately heavy items, such as computers and AV equipment. Performing duties during non-business hours (may be required). Performing other duties as assigned.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in information technology or a related field of study. Applicants must have four (4) years of specialized work experience as a helpdesk support specialist or equivalent position providing customer service, experience working in a team environment, and a strong work ethic. One (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the previous level in the federal service is required. For example, one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-08 level is required to qualify for appointment at the JS-09 level. Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible work experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities that will enable the individual to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. Applicants must have: Excellent customer service skills and experience, including the ability to communicate technical information in a user-friendly (non-technical) fashion both verbally and in writing. Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment to analyze, isolate, and solve problems to ensure timely delivery while maintaining accurate recordkeeping. Strong work ethic, present a professional demeanor, and demonstrate effective time management, organizational, and analytical skills. Innovative and creative problem-solving skills who can effectively work with the team and management on projects and daily challenges with strong verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge and understanding of enterprise technology solutions such as Microsoft 365, Group Policies, Active Directory, Virtual Private Network, Multi-factor Authentication, File and Print Servers, and Basic Networking concepts. PREFERRED SKILLS Highly competitive applicants will have the following: Extensive experience with installing, configuring, administering, and troubleshooting technical issues related to hardware, desktop workstations, and laptop hardware, including associated software, printers, monitors, and other peripherals is highly desirable. Demonstrated experience in end-user support of Microsoft 365 products, including Outlook, Exchange, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from Windows operating systems is desirable. Experience in configuring, installing, and supporting desktop, laptop, tablet computers, and related peripheral devices, as well as mobile computing devices (specifically Apple iOS devices) is also highly preferred. Experience in supporting voice and video telecommunications technologies such as VoIP telephone systems and IP-connected video teleconferencing hardware is beneficial, as well as experience supporting AV technologies. The Commission offers regular telework (not full-time) to employees in positions deemed eligible by the staff director and who meet the requirements of an approved telework arrangement in which an employee performs official duties at home or at an approved telework site. The Commission also offers training opportunities to employees through LinkedIn Learning, and the Judiciary's Online University, which offers academic credit and professional credit programs through web-based learning. These training tools assist Commission employees with taking online courses in a flexible way, by offering training courses in the areas of: staff training and development; credit toward undergraduate degree programs; continuing education and non-credit certificate programs; executive education; contract training; credit credentials courses for continuing professional education and credit for individuals who hold credentials and achieve certifications associated with several globally-recognized sponsored organizations.
