This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), Ultrasound Technologist, employee at this level performs primarily ultrasound but could be asked to perform general diagnostic radiology procedures within licensure. Incumbent must be able to carry out the assigned tasks independently. Must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment. Performs, all ultrasound and radiology examinations ranging from the routine to the highly specialized. Performs exams in the Imaging department, intensive care unit, patient wards, clinics, same day surgery, and the surgical suites or on an on-call basis as needed. Independently performs ultrasound examinations including sonography of the carotid arteries vertebral arteries, venocava, descending aorta, iliacs, renal and hepatic arteries and veins, splenic and peripheral arteries and veins and superior mesentery artery. Performs visceral sonographic examinations including liver, gall bladder, spleen, pancreas, and chest. Performs gynecological and urology examinations including ovaries, uterus, adnexal regions, kidneys, ureter, and bladder. Perform vascular imaging, both arterial and venous. As patient care needs dictate the technologist will perform a variety of diagnostic radiographic procedures in the department and in the portable setting. The technologist will independently make routine radiographic examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or the injury. Prepares contrast material used for patient examinations. Administers or assists in the administration of contrast material as requested by the radiologist. Maintains sterile field for procedures such as biopsies and/or aspirations, drainage, etc. Prepares sterile tray, to include preparation of contrast, supplying catheters and guide wires, sterile assurance of the patient and equipment may meet the sterile field with the purpose of assuring that all preventive measures have been taken to prevent contamination of the patient and/or equipment. Assists the Imaging Supervisor and/or other departmental employees with facility or departmental projects and committees when needed. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 07:30 AM- 4:00 PM. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Preferred Experience: Vascular experience and the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II 119, Appendix G - 25 Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work require long periods of standing, walking, and sitting. Work involves constant bending, lifting, twisting, and carrying moderately heavy items such as cassettes. Use of mobile x-ray and ultrasound units in the main hospital and in the operating room requires twisting, turning to manipulate the x-ray tube and/or ultrasound unit. The work requires pushing wheelchair and stretcher patients. Positioning patients who are unconscious or disabled requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.
