This position is located in Nursing Service- Emergency Department. The Health Technician provides direct patient care, clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and related activities in the Nursing service.

Duties

Job duties include, but not limited to: Performs direct patient support work including bathing, oral care, hair care, related hygiene and toileting care; postmortem care; turning, positioning, lifting, transferring patients. Obtains and documents patients' vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, actual weight, oxygen saturation and postural vital signs). Performs timely electrocardiograms (ECG/EKG) and routine maintenance and storage of ECG/EKG and/or other monitoring equipment Transports specimens to laboratory or specified location. Arranges and passes medical instruments and materials to medical/nursing professional for a variety of tests and procedures. Performs skin puncture for blood glucose checks and monitors glucometer controls. Performs venipuncture to obtain serum blood samples as ordered. Move, lifts, transfers and transports patients as necessary using proper equipment and correct transfer techniques. Assists patients to ambulate and transfer safely. Work Schedule: Various shifts available. Examples include: Days (07:30AM - 08:00PM) and Nights (07:30PM - 08:00AM) with every other weekend often required, based on the needs of the service. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Individual Occupational Requirement for Health Aid and Technician (0640) Series (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can't be waived. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Please clearly state your experience in resume. In addition to the IOR, applicants must meet the specialized experience below: GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting medical staff with or performing diagnostic procedures (EKGs, obtaining and documenting patients' blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, weight, oxygen saturation, etc.,); Arranging (suction, oxygen equipment, etc.,) and passing medical instruments and materials to the provider, providing emotional support to the patients; cleaning equipment and rooms between procedures; Performing health care procedures such as collection of specimens (venipuncture to obtain serum blood samples, finger stick for blood glucose, etc.,) applying dressings, and adjusting simple supportive equipment. Preferred Experience: Previous experience as an EMT or ED Technician preferred. Experience in basic patient care procedures. EKG and Phlebotomy experience preferred. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires the HT to be mobile throughout the medical center as needed, involving standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting (moderately heavy). The HT should be capable of prolonged standing/walking and be physically capable of pushing equipment, wheelchairs and patient stretchers. Proper lifting and body mechanics must be utilized at all times to prevent injury.
