Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below to view Eligibilities being considered and other IMPORTANT information. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a telephone operator by receiving and placing local and long distance calls on a console switchboard.

Duties

Receives and places telephone calls. Operates a semi-automatic switchboard. Places and receives a full range of calls including local, long distance, collect, and conference calls. Places emergency notification calls. Notifies key installation personnel of emergency situations under actual and/or exercise conditions. Provides information and caller assistance services. Provides information on service to callers based upon a general knowledge of the functions and activities of organizational segments, contractor activities, and tenants on the installation. Performs a variety of support activities. Makes periodic circuit checks and notifies supervisor of any outages encountered.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least six (6) months of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates my ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled, such as having a working knowledge of general administrative and clerical procedures to answer and refer telephone calls, respond to routine requests for information, maintain logs, and the ability to communicate orally using tact and courtesy. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed one year of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school, junior college, college, or university. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of general administrative and clerical procedures to answer and refer telephone calls, respond to routine requests for information, and maintain logs. 2. Ability to learn organizations functions and procedures sufficient to connect telephone calls to their proper destinations. 3. Ability to use specific procedural guidelines pertaining to administrative support, including locally developed equipment-operating and processing instructions, which are directly applicable to the work. 4. ability to communicate orally using tact and courtesy. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
