The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a telephone operator by receiving and placing local and long distance calls on a console switchboard
Duties
Receives and places telephone calls. Operates a semi-automatic switchboard.
Place emergency notification calls. Notifies key personnel of emergency situations under actual and/or exercise conditions.
Provides information and caller assistance services.
Performs a variety of support activities.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least six months of general experience equivalent to the GS-02 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. General Experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

EDUCATION: One year of education above high school. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT IF QUALIFYING BASED ON EDUCATION. FAILURE TO SUBMIT YOUR TRANSCRIPT WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT IF QUALIFYING BASED ON EDUCATION. FAILURE TO SUBMIT YOUR TRANSCRIPT WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of general administrative and clerical procedures to answer and refer telephone calls, respond to routine requests for information, and maintain logs.
2. Ability to learn functions and procedures sufficient to connect telephone calls to their proper destinations .
3. Ability to use specific procedural guidelines pertaining to administrative support, including equipment-operating and processing instructions, which are directly applicable to the work.
4. Ability to communicate orally using tact and courtesy
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
