This position is located in the Patient Care Service at Lovell Federal VA Health Care System - Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, IL. The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center is larger than just a single facility, but rather a system of facilities throughout Northeastern Illinois which provide medical and dental services to U.S. Military Veterans, Recruits, Active Duty and eligible beneficiaries.
Duties

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
The Health Technician - Medical Assistant is responsible for working interdependently with other members of the clinic team to provide administrative and clinical patient care within the standards of clinic practice and performance. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Administering vaccines in accordance with current guidelines and providing emergency care for treatment of anaphylaxis
Performing phlebotomy using standard blood tubes in accordance with established standard operating procedures
Preparing exam rooms prior to patient's arrival
Obtaining patient's medical record; checking patient's vital signs; obtaining and documenting patient's current medical history, drug history, chief complaints, allergies and vital signs
Assisting the provider as needed during exams
Performing diagnostic procedures when ordered
Checking each chart for the provider's signature, stamp, and each patient's diagnosis prior to returning the chart to Health Records
Obtaining lab and x-ray results and completing lab and x-ray requisitions
Maintaining exam room stock levels and performing routine maintenance of exam rooms, including but not limited to dusting, cleaning, washing basins
Answering telephone and transcribing accurate messages
Ensuring that any broken and unsafe equipment is removed from the clinic in a timely manner and notifying appropriate personnel
Assisting with patient flow and giving direct patient care as directed
Operating the following medical equipment as directed: Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor, Hand Held Nebulizer, EKG Machine (12 lead), Electronic Thermometer, IV Infusion pump (Set-up only), Typanometer
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:30 a.m. to 04:00 p.m.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as a Health Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.
Specialized Experience (GS-05): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-04). Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled (i.e., experience performing basic patient care in a clinic/hospital setting, utilizing adequate communication skills with patients and healthcare providers; understanding information resource technology; and maintaining a safe environment regarding patient care. OR,
Education (GS-05): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Combination (GS-05): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Work center requires some physical exertions such as walking, sitting, standing, lifting and bending. Work may require prolonged periods of data entry and/or retrieval on a computer. May be utilized for patient transport via wheelchair or gurney.
