This position is located in the Engineering Maintenance Department at the Thomas E. Creek VA Health Care System Center in Amarillo, TX. Incumbent shall have responsibility for multiple trade activities relative to maintenance, repair and replacement to isolate or resolve malfunction or make necessary adjustments and repairs requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with electrical, pipefitting, and carpentry.
Duties
Electrical: Must have knowledge of the electrical trade to permit working from blueprints, wiring diagrams, cut-sheets, manufacturers drawings and engineering drawings, to plan and layout work to install and repair new and existing electrical systems, controls, fire alarm panels and equipment for furnishing light and power to AHU's, RTU's, automatic faucets, package boilers, automatic valves, controls for kitchen equipment including disposals, refrigerators, freezers, rational cookers, fryers, and ovens, to include replacing ballasts, tracing circuits, and adding additional circuits. Disassembles equipment, repairs and/or replaces parts and components, cleans and reassembles. Incumbent uses a variety of tools and test equipment including wire cutters and strippers, drills, soldering irons, ohmmeters, ammeters, voltmeters and various other electrical and measuring devices.
Pipefitting: Must have knowledge of pipefitting methods and techniques. Must acquire the skill thru training and previous experience as needed to install, modify, and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators. Incumbent must also have the skill needed to install equipment i.e. water heaters, food service equipment, pumps, valves, steam operated equipment, electric motors, condensate return systems, heat exchangers, chill water systems, control valves, automatic faucets, package boilers, automatic valves, using accepted plumbing and mechanical trade practices.
Carpentry: Must know how to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and work with simple fractions to plan and measure material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in shop drawings, architectural drawings and knowledge of the carpentry trade. Knowledge of the use of various carpentry tools and machinery such as table saws, radial arm saws, band saws, drill pressed, hammer, hand saws, tile cutters, knives, etc., will be required to make repairs as a team member of the ward zone mechanic. Incumbent must have journeyman level carpentry skills gained through experience, training or a combination of both.
Incumbent will serve on an overtime required snow/ice removal team during inclement weather situations.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Alternate schedules may be necessary to meet the needs of the organization.)

The incumbent must occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing fifty pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require incumbent to stand, stoop, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to extremes of heat and cold, dust, dirt, noise, grease, unpleasant smelling fumes and moisture as well as outside the normal indoor environment of the hospital. The work environment includes crawl spaces and interterrestrial spaces of the hospital. Incumbent may occasionally be exposed to disease, bad weather, possible electrical shock, refrigerant gases, flying splinters and chips, and respiratory ailments. Incumbent has frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, infections, cuts and bruises. The incumbent will be part of a snow removal team and should expect to be called back for snow removal.
