This position is located in the Maintenance Department of the Amarillo VA Health Care System under the supervision of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor and assists in the maintenance and repair of various components throughout the facility. Primarily responsible for performing repairs and PM's to the HVAC/R systems. Typical work assignments include changing filters on air handler units, performing PM procedures, cleaning ice machines and refrigerators and freezer components.

Duties

Major duties include: Assists various trades in their day-to-day activities. Performs repair and maintenance of the facility air conditioning equipment, including fan coils, induction units, radiation heaters and heat exchangers. Performs periodic preventative maintenance on air handlers, exhaust fans and associated equipment. Incumbent cleans bin style and dispenser style ice machines on a monthly basis according to manufacturer's recommendations. Uses judgment to troubleshoot and repair HVAC/R equipment, to include exhaust fans, air handlers, split A/C units, condensers, compressors and evaporators. Performs routine ventilation surveys and maintains a log according to an established schedule. Generates and submits report to the M&O Supervisor. Keeps a log of the preventive maintenance performed on each system to include date, work performed, etc. Maintains the chemical injection pumps for the cooling towers and performs water chemistry tests to adjust chemical feeds as needed. Maintains an updated inventory of the materials used for the maintenance of equipment (e.g., air filters, carbon filters, water filters, belts, pulleys, driers, etc.). Performs penetration inspections on fire and smoke walls per NFPA 101 standards to check for fire proofing conditions. Generates and maintains an updated equipment inventory list of chiller and HVAC equipment to reflect equipment type and location of air handlers, ice machines, refrigerators, fan coils, pumps, induction units, etc. Removes, repairs and installs new and rebuilt electric motors following NEC guidelines. Troubleshoots and repairs, pumps and motors. Sizes and installs ductwork in accordance with accepted HVAC/R calculations. Maintains and repairs air compressors used for HVAC/R controls using accepted pneumatic practices; installs, maintains and repairs pneumatic digital controls. Installs, maintains and repairs condensate return pumps and associated piping. Maintains and repairs steam heating and hot-water heating coils. Installs new and repairs or replaces existing piping for steam distribution system to the AHU's following Universal Plumbing Code. Assists Boiler Plant operators with repairs to the Steam Distribution system, from the steam headers to the termination point, to include but not limited to steam coils, radiant steam heaters, and steam traps. Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools in order to make repairs, modifications and for installation and removal of equipment. Runs and terminates electrical connections to HVAC/R equipment including but not limited to mini split units, condensing units, package HVAC units, package steam boiler units, roof top HVAC units, freezers and refrigerators that are hard-wired in, compressors, louvers, chillers, cooling towers, and air compressors. Repairs, maintains and operates all equipment in the Chiller Plant. Adjusts cooling tower water level to ensure maximum efficiency of the chillers. Operates, maintains and repairs 1- 550 KW Generator, and 1- 750 KW generator. Performs snow removal duties and will work with the snow removal team.
