This position is located in the Engineering Service, Maintenance and Repair Section of the Thomas E. Creek VA Health Care System, in Amarillo, TX. The primary purpose of the position is to serve in the capacity as Maintenance Mechanic Leader and is responsible for routine and emergency maintenance and repair as well as leading workers to accomplish trades and labor work and ensuring the quality of the work performed by workers. Incumbent will lead workers in the Maintenance and Repair Section.
Duties
The Incumbent shall have responsibility for multiple trade activities relative to maintenance, repair and replacement to isolate or resolve malfunction or make necessary adjustments and repairs requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with the following systems: electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, lock smith, and carpentry. Typical work assignments include the performance of visual examination, operational test and verbal requests from the Maintenance Supervisor. Incumbent will also lead and inspect the work of junior employees. Incumbent will assign work orders and fill in when the Maintenance Supervisor is absent.
Position is that of a journeyman tradesman work leader for a combination of 8 employees in a mixed situation. This section includes plumbing, pipefitting, electrical, carpentry, and locksmith trades. Incumbent shall have responsibility for multiple trade activities relative to maintenance,
repair and replacement to isolate or resolve malfunctions or make necessary adjustments, repairs or improvements. Checks work in progress and when finished, checks for compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Answers
workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (e.g., technical orders); obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that come up during the work. Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems (e.g., additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees. Assures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
Performs pipefitting installations and repairs on all piping systems including medical vacuum systems, steam, and natural gas i.e. steam heating, steam generation, radiators, circulating pumps, and high-pressure piping systems. Perform repairs on condensate pumps and the associated systems, medical air pumps, dental air pumps, and hot water circulating pumps using replacement packing, sleeves, bearings, seals, and impellers. Developing patterns and laying out, cutting, forming, joining, assembling, and installing items such as heating, air conditioning, and ventilating pipes; conduits; drying ovens; metal furniture; and other items with combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and lanes; Installing, recognizing the causes of faulty equipment and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering and circulating.
The incumbent will perform complex repairs on hospital and ward equipment such as, washer dryer sets, auto door operators, pharmacy packaging equipment, and electric circuits, outlets and distribution panels. Troubleshoots and diagnoses malfunctions. Disassembles, repairs or
replaces defective components or assemblies. Reassembles, aligns, adjusts and tests repaired devices to ensure proper operation by a use of a wide range of test equipment. Retests items after repairs and modifications. Installs and repairs electric wiring systems, related switches,
distribution panels, and outlet boxes as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools, and appliances. Performs maintenance services; diagnoses system or equipment malfunctions; and repairs as needed.
Performs the full range of carpentry skills and techniques for repairing, constructing, altering and maintaining wood/wood substitute components of buildings and structures where accuracy, spacing, and fit are essential and structural soundness or appearance are important. Plans and
completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation. Selects lumber, materials, and supplies required to complete assigned work. Works from drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction methods/techniques.
Employee will be assigned weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual PM's that must be completed within a prescribed timeline. Employee coordinates complex work assignments that involve the use of multiple crafts and trades. This will include coordination between facility leadership, the stakeholders and all other involved parties. This will include electrical, steam, domestic water, fire protection water, and HVAC shutdowns.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm (Incumbent will serve on an overtime required inclement weather team (snow/ice removal))

Physical Requirements: Work is performed from ladders, platforms, under equipment, in crawl spaces, in areas that are hot, in hard to reach locations, and outdoors. Employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in uncomfortable positions. Employee will be exposed to the physical demands on a daily basis. Employee will lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to extremes of heat and cold, dust, dirt, noise, grease, bad smelling fumes, and moisture as well as outdoor environment. The work environment includes crawl spaces and interstitial spaces. He/she may occasionally be exposed to disease, bad weather, electrical shock, refrigerant gasses and danger from flying splinters and chips, and respiratory ailments. He/she has frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, infections, cuts and bruises. Employee will wear appropriate PPE for the work being done.
