The incumbent is a social worker and serves in a full-time capacity within the Mental Health Service (MHS) at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, including its affiliated community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). The social worker will work as a member of the Substance Use Disorder Specialty Team, providing specialized care to this population.
Duties
The incumbent will mainly provide intake assessments, individual psychotherapy, and group psychotherapy and will also likely provide couples therapy. Care will be expected to be delivered mainly in person and through VA Video Connect (VVC) to the Veteran's home or other safe location. Patients will be presenting with a broad spectrum of mental health, emotional, and behavioral presentations. The standard location of work is at the John D Dingell VA Medical Center main facility, where the SUD Specialty Team is generally located.
Performs specialized SUD evaluations/assessments, including the determination of ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) levels of care
Performs routine and in-depth substance use disorder evaluations and assessments, including intake assessments
Performs specialized treatment of complex substance use disorders incorporating complex multiple causation indifferential diagnosis and treatment of Veterans including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoseswithin approved clinical privileges
Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions for treatment of SUD for patients in the SUD Specialty program, including evidence-based psychotherapy and other approved therapeutic interventions utilizing VA based guidance and guidelines in the treatment of SUD (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for SUD (CBT-SUD), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Contingency Management (CM), etc.) through individual, couples, and group psychotherapy
Uses the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care
Independently identifies high-risk patients and connects with needed resources and services, as needed
Provides case management interventions for the treatment of complex substance use disorders, often with comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder and mental health disorders
Provides patient, family, and caregiver education, both in individual and group formats
Provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates family conferences and serves as liaison to family members, as needed
Assesses the need for referral for more intensive and/or other mental health services
Liaisons/advocates on behalf of the SUD Specialty Team and/or Veteran/caregiver between settings of care, both internal and external to the VA
Provides specialized psychosocial and psychotherapeutic consultation regarding SUD and addiction to staff outside of the SUD Specialty Team
Responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center, including entering data into the EBP database
Consults, collaborates, and coordinates with other staff and community services/resources that provide care to Veterans
Completes comprehensive Veteran-centered, recovery-focused treatment plans and updates as appropriate/required
Completes clinical reminders
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.
Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
English Language Proficiency. Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Regulations.
Grade Determinations (GS-11, Full Performance Level)
Experience, Education and Licensure. GS-11 full performance level requires completion of a minimum of I year of post-MSW degree experience in the field of health care social work (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. OR, In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required 1 year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting.
Assignments. This is the full performance level for social workers. GS-11 social workers are licensed or certified to independently practice social work. They are assigned to all program areas, including inpatient or outpatient medicine, surgery, mental health, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, and geriatrics. Employees provide professional, independent social work services in the assigned area.

Preferred Experience: VA experience, substance use disorder diagnosis and treatment experience, CAADC
Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 lbs.); light carrying (under 15 lbs.); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (intermittent); standing (intermittent); hearing (aid permitted); hearing without aid. Ability to utilize the phone and computer and sit for prolonged periods of time. The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items like papers or books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
