Duties

Installs, maintains, repairs or replaces, modifies, loads, and tests electrical wiring, circuits, systems, fixtures, panels, switches, breakers, controls, and appliances within residences, kitchens, dispensary, warehouses, shops, or offices. Locates and diagnoses issues by using various meters and testing devices such as voltmeter, ammeter, bell ringer, and test lamps. Lays out work; measures, cuts, threads, bands, assembles and installs conduits to connect outlets, panels and boxes; installs and maintains switch and outlet boxes. Maintains, installs and repairs fans, heating appliances, lights, connections for electric machines, distribution panels, searchlights, buzzer or call systems. Maintains and repairs air compressors used on fire alarm systems, including mechanical as well as electrical repair and replacement parts. Maintains and repairs emergency standby generators, dishwashers, and other types of electrical equipment.

Qualifications

To qualify for an Electrician, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of an Electrician without more than normal supervision (SOE): I perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as laying out work; measuring cuts, threads, bands, assembling and installing conduits to connect outlets, panels and boxes; and installing and maintaining switch and outlet boxes. Additional Position Information: The incumbent of this position has been designated as an emergency employee. The term "Emergency Employee" is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Required to stoop, stand, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts tools, parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifts heavier items. Working Conditions: Works inside buildings and shops and outside. Subject to contact with dirt, grease and dust Exposed to the possibility of electric shock, burns, cuts and bruises. Working conditions are a normal part of the Job and are considered in the evaluation.
