The Telephone Operator is within the Health Administration Service. This person is responsible for receiving and distributing incoming calls and messages throughout the medical center.

Duties

Major Duties include but not limited to: Handling full range of local, long distance, and special calls including Code Blue, suicide, conference calls and other emergencies Maintains on-call and call-back lists for coordination of routing calls and messages Operates the computerized telecommunication console to direct phone calls and personal computer using VA's VISTA application to send messages and retrieve information needed to direct calls and coordinate distribution of messages at the medical center in a timely and accurate manner Performs necessary maintenance and programming of radio and digital pagers with numbers for the paging system when issuing and assigning pagers Maintains key control sign-out sheet for the telephone switchboard room and emergency elevator access as well as responsibility for elevator and patient bed-side phones Performs a variety of administrative duties including documentation, daily logs of unusual events for each tour of duty and other related clerical functions as assigned Work Schedule: Irregular shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/10/2023. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: General Experience: You must have one year of general experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of general experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Receive and distribute incoming calls Effective communication and customer service skills Responding to emergency alarms and making emergency announcements using the overhead paging system Coordinate the distribution of messages at the medical center in a timely accurate manner. Perform a variety of administrative duties including switchboard and emergency elevator access and patients bed-side telephone OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two years above high school. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Physical Requirements: Position requires long period of sitting, causing possible discomfort in legs and lower back. Good hearing and clear speaking are essential. Incumbent must posses strong upper limb dexterity to perform multitasks.
