This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. Serves as a Conservation Specialist in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), and supports the conservation and preservation mission of NARA. The incumbent performs a range of moderate to highly complex actions in support of the operations and outputs of the NARA conservation lab.
Duties
As a Conservation Specialist, you will:
Provide general and specialized maintenance of laboratory and preservation supplies and other routine or specialized activities that contribute to the operations and outputs of the conservation laboratory.
Laboratory operations may include registration of incoming or outgoing records; maintenance of the chemical safety plan; conservation treatment or any other activities that contribute at the specialist level.
Design and fabricate unique custom housing for long-term storage, transport, and/or exhibition of a wide assortment of unique archival records and artifacts of high intrinsic value. These housings are fabricated based on the condition, format, and access requirements of the item or items and may be fabricated by hand or with the assistance of a box making machine. Train lower graded conservation technicians and other unit staff in the proper procedures for creating custom housings for archival documents and artifacts.
Serve as the coordinator of all activities relating to efforts to fabricate custom archival housings and oversees the work of lower graded and/or same graded staff who are assigned to work on custom housings.
Implement approved conservation treatment, including dry cleaning, mold removal, disassembly and/or separation of sheets, humidification and flattening, disbinding, tape and adhesive removal, stain reduction, aqueous and non-aqueous deacidification, washing, mending, lining, and guarding.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience for the GS-09 is one year of experience at the GS-07 level, or equivalent, in either public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience must include:
- Experience designing and fabricating custom archival housings; And
- Experience using and training others on the use of computer software and hardware to operate box making machinery; And
- Experience performing conservation treatment on a variety of archival records.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07level for 52 weeks.
