This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Conservation Branch, within Research Services, Preservation Programs Division. The incumbent is a journey level Conservator performing a full range of conservation work, in a variety of settings and involving a wide variety of materials. While performing complex assignments, the incumbent is responsible for communicating technical and topical issues, ensuring proper storage, handling, conservation and reproduction.
Duties
As a Conservator, you will:
Research the history of records, the materials of which they are comprised and those which contributed to their formation.
May design research projects concerning conservation processes, techniques and materials to support treatment and further advance an understanding of conservation related issues.
Prepare condition reports describing physical attributes of the media and support of each record.
Work closely with representatives of archival units to determine proper conservation and preservation needs of records and keep archival staff informed of current and future conservation developments and preservation policies affecting materials in their varied and special collections.
Apply and develop a range of storage and housing options to ensure appropriate preservation of records.
Train other conservators, conservation technicians and interns in conservation methods and techniques, conducting on-the-job training sessions to develop or improve their skills.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Experience determining the nature and condition of archival records requiring stabilization and conservation treatment;
AND
Experience carrying out conservation treatment of photographs and preparing written treatment proposals for records, including selection of treatment options, procedures, methods and techniques, and materials to be used; AND
Experience advising others on current preservation practices and policies related to the care, housing, and handling of archival records.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-12, you must have been at the GS-11level for 52 weeks.
