You will serve as a Painter in the Preservation Shop (Code 970), Production Resources Department Manager (Code 901), Production Resources Department (Code 900),of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will perform different types of surface preparations using solvent, acids, etc, in preparing surfaces for the application of high performance coating. You will read and interpret directions relating to the mixture, use and application of all materials being applied and determine the proper procedures and methods of applications. You will apply fillers to rough surfaces prior to painting. You will identify hazardous working conditions/hazardous material labels and relate and apply proper safety precautions.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You may be assigned to other duty stations throughout the Hampton Roads area.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Preparing surfaces, blending and matching paints, coating of various surfaces and simulating various finishes, Setting up, performing operations and identifying the availability of safety and emergency equipment using ship, submarine and shipyard layouts, Working from prints, plans, sketches, specifications and oral instructions to identify areas to be protected and complete jobs.
