The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. This Student Trainee (Administration & Office Support) position is located at the Orlando VA Medical Center in Orlando, FL performing a full range of standard clerical assignments consisting of related steps, processes, or methods that require the employee to identify and recognize differences among a variety of recurring situations.
Duties
This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. The Student Trainee (Administration & Office Support) performs standard clerical assignments and resolves recurring situations. She/he assists specialists in the preparation and presentation of data relative to programs and other administrative matters.
Duties include, but not limited to:
Responds orally to inquiries or requests for information, follows-up on requests or complaints, and inputting data into a computer system.
Prepares and maintains statistical data to provide input for service reports.
Verifies accuracy and completeness of information as well as processing incoming documents.
Utilizes office automation equipment to efficiently produce quality, accurate work.
Develops factual information and resource materials for Veterans and staff.
Composes, prepares, or reviews correspondence prepared for the purpose of obtaining or supplying information.
Determines file retention and disposal including determining applicable authorities, screening, and preparation of files for retention and disposal.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Note: The Pathways Program participant will enter a written Participant Agreement that clearly identifies expectations, a general description of duties, evaluation procedures, work schedules and minimum eligibility requirements for conversion to term or permanent positions in the competitive service.
Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career- conditional or career appointment within 120 days following the successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements. The conversion is NOT guaranteed and is based on the needs of the agency.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. This position may be authorized for ADHOC telework. Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/31/2023.
Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.
You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below:
GS-4:
To qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must have: At least one (1) full year of general experience to qualify for the GS-4 level. General experience is defined as experience that equipped you with the ability to acquire the particular knowledge, skills, and competencies to successfully perform the duties of the Student Trainee (Administration and Office Support). Examples of general experience include: answers and directs phone calls; prepares office correspondence; maintains inventory of office supplies and equipment; searches records or files; utilizes automation equipment and computer software. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. OR,
Education: Successfully completed 2 full academic years of post-high school education leading to a bachelor's degree with specialization in or directly related to the field in which the student trainees will receive training on the job or associate's degree. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. All education must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. OR,
Combined Education & Experience: Possess a combination of general experience and education to qualify for the GS-4 Student Trainee (Administration and Office Support). For example, the position to be filled is a Student Trainee (Administration and Office Support), GS-04, and a candidate possesses 8 months of qualifying experience and 20 semester hours of college. The applicant meets 67 percent of the required experience and 33 percent of the required education. The applicant meets 100 percent of the total requirements and is qualified for the position. GS-5:
To qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must have: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Student Trainee (Administration and Office Support). Examples of specialized experience include: receives telephone inquiries and provides proper information or directing the call to the proper person or area; prepares, composes, and reviews correspondence prepared for the purpose of obtaining or supplying information; searches records or files to compose responses; processes incoming or outgoing mail; utilizes automation equipment and computer software. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. OR,
Education: Successfully completed 4 full academic years of post-high school education leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. NOTE: All education must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR,
Combined Education & Experience: Possess a combination of specialized experience and education to qualify for the GS-5 Student Trainee (Administration and Office Support). For example, the position to be filled is a Student Trainee (Administration and Office Support), GS-05, and a candidate possesses 9 months of specialized experience and has completed one (1) academic year of college. The applicant meets 67 percent of the required experience and 33 percent of the required education. The candidate meets 75 percent of the required experience and 25 percent of the required education. He/she meets 100 percent of the requirement for 1 year of specialized experience and is qualified for the position. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Requires some physical effort such as standing, sitting, walking, or bending. There are no special physical demands. The work is performed in an office setting involving everyday risks or discomforts. Normal safety precautions are adequate.
