Employee will serve as a Health Technician aligned within Primary Care Teams located at the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Louisville, KY.
Duties

Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
Provides nursing care to the Ambulatory Care patients utilizing skill in the care of complex conditions of multiple acute and/or chronic nature and recognizes adverse or dangerous situations (e.g., changes in blood pressure, increased blood glucose readings, etc.)
Performs thorough assessment of patients with complex illnesses (chronic or acute; hypertension; diabetes (foot exams); etc.). Verifies clinical findings with professional nurse.
Interviews patients and gathers clinical information; triages patients based on prioritization of patient care.
Delivers diagnostic and therapeutic regimens to meet patient care needs such as change dressings, deliver breathing treatments, perform EKG's, etc.
Supports emergency situations, performs basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, care of seizure patient, and assists fire and disaster control groups.
Performs phlebotomy by venipuncture on patients to obtain blood specimens using correct receptacle, correct labeling, and bags specimens (e.g., blood; urine; feces). Performs hematest of stool and glucose monitoring. Reports findings to nurse/provider.
Assists setting up intravenous equipment.
Operates medical equipment properly to obtain vital signs, temperature, height and weight, uses wall and portable oxygen, portable EKG's using proper anatomical placement of leads on the chest wall for accurate tracing.
Cleans and assist with suturing minor wounds. Applies applications of simple dressings, ace wraps, arm slings, etc.
Transcribes physician orders in the computer such as ordering diagnostic tests, processing admissions, sending consults, ordering labs, scheduling procedures, etc.
Maintains patient electronic medical records (demographics, insurance information, medical terminology and coding classification, etc.)
Initiates problem solving and corrective action for patient's need, requests, complaints, progress, and problems.
Provides guidance and education to patients and family members.
Stocks patient care exam rooms and replaces supplies/equipment after use and returns supplies for sterilization.
Keeps the primary care team up to date on administrative regulations.
Work Schedule: Night Shift, working (6) 12 hour shifts plus (1) 8-hour shift, from 7:30PM - 8:00am, per pay-period (bi-weekly)
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience includes working in a hospital environment providing direct patient care to include obtaining and documenting patient vital signs, phlebotomy/blood draws, performing EKG's; interviewing patients to gather information and maintain electronic medical records, including documenting diagnostic tests and results, medical terminology and coding classification; and applying interpersonal skills to provide guidance to patients on procedures and to communicate patient care activities with the clinical team. -OR-
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed Six months of Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required. Graduate education must be directly related to this position to be filled. -OR-
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED):Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education combined with related specialized experience are also qualifying.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: There is a physical demand of shifting and moving patients onto stretchers and into wheelchairs. Requires travel to treatment areas with ease. There is the potential for extended periods of sitting, standing, and carrying items up to 20 pounds (i.e., medical records, manuals).
