The position is located in the Office of Health Communication and Public Liaison (OHCPL), Office of Administration, Office of the Director, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). The incumbent serves as a senior writer-editor and a member of the public affairs team, reporting on research advances and important NIH policies and programs. The incumbent articulates, interprets, explains, and promotes other newsworthy activities supported by the Institute

Duties

Develops, writes, and edits a variety of print, multimedia, and digital materials of a scientific/health background nature. Interprets public health implications of research findings. Ensures that content does not conflict with the policies and objectives of related programs. Exercises considerable judgment in selecting sources, interpreting findings, analyzing information, verifying facts, and drawing conclusions. Gathers, develops, and checks the accuracy of information by research and by interviews with subject-matter experts, program officials, and others. Consults on design and graphics, and recommends format changes and alternative methods of presentation to enhance communication effectiveness. Prepares materials to publicize events or newsworthy announcements (such as research advances), and elicits media coverage. Serves as editor of NIDCD newsletter(s), overseeing the preparation, production, and distribution of each issue. Writes, edits, and manages content for the NIDCD website and social media channels, such as Twitter. Prepares answers to complex public inquiries received by the NIDCD and the NIDCD Information Clearinghouse, ensuring that all replies are complete, scientifically accurate and helpful to the inquirer.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Writer-Editor, GS-1082 position at the GS-12 level, you must have: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: writing and editing products that articulate, interpret, and explain a variety of subjects, tailored to specific media and audiences; analyzing and editing both draft and final versions of a variety of written products prepared by the staff, management, or outside contractors; assisting authors or independently redrafting and modifying to improve the written material as to consistency, clarity, and succinctness as well as sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; coordinating the work of designers and technicians in developing effective, accessible formats, as well as illustrations and tabular material to augment the written message; and evaluating and adapting publishing procedures to changing technology.
