Duties
As a Microbiologist, you will:
Perform various techniques to rapidly identify and characterize microbiological agents that cause a number of diseases
Identify methods and procedures to collect data, and conduct experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of the studies or experiments
Ensure that incoming specimens are processed and triaged maintaining "chain of custody"
Prepare a wide variety of charts, graphs, manuscripts, spreadsheets, etc. to report on study results and note any inconsistencies or area where the data appears inconclusive
Record study results in accordance with established procedures and maintains complete, detailed records of all experiments performed
Prepare results for publication in a variety of journals, monographs, etc.
Provide training in the use of laboratory equipment and proper laboratory procedures, as necessary
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum Qualifications:
For GS-11:
To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: performing laboratory procedures and processes as it relates to microorganisms and their reactions to the environment, including identifying methods andprocedures to collect data, conducting experiments and studies, and adjusting methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of the studies or experiments.
OR
Three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
For GS-12:
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: experience performing microbiological scientific studies or support work in public health areas associated with biological agents that may cause disease.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval.
