This position is located within the Office of the Chief of the Nurse Executives, in the Surgical Service, located at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC), North Chicago, Illinois (West Campus). The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the care and treatment of surgical patients and administer emergent care to patients in both the Perioperative (Peri-op)/Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and throughout the FHCC under the supervision of the doctors and nurses.

Duties

Participates with clinical data collection, gathers accurate information about patients such as medical history, vital signs, allergies, pertinent health problems, and current medications. Turns, lifts, repositions, ambulates, and assists patients via bed transfer, chair transfer, sitting and standing. Utilizes the Federal Electronic Health Record to document patient care and observations. Recognizes medical emergencies and applies knowledge to prevent and or provide interventions for response. Provides direct observation and participates in care with all patients. May be required to provided 1:1 care. Applies and removes physiological monitors such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure cuffs, sequential compression devices, and cardiac leads. Conducts quality control checks and operates equipment, such as glucometers, defibrillators, bladder scanners, electrocardiogram machines, etc. Promotes Infection Control practices. Demonstrates application of principles of infection control such as hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, and basic environmental cleanliness. Works as a team player to provide support to the entire Peri-Operative division, communicating findings related both directly and indirectly to patient care. Interacts courteously with all members of the patient care team, patients, and families. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/02/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience verifying patient identity, performing observation based screening, collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel; cleans the rooms and equipment used for preparing patients for medical procedures; performing sterile procedures; collecting, labeling, and transporting patient specimens; performing wound care; operating specialized equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, bladder scans, electrocardiographic monitors, and oxygen apparatus according to training and national/local policy; and maintaining equipment, identifying malfunctions and coordinating with medical maintenance and/or equipment representatives regarding the problems. OR, Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have at least 9 semester hours of graduate education or an internship, but only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, (e.g., wheelchair-bound patients or assisting patients into their vehicles) on a regular basis. There are also periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and reaching. Various equipment items may also be moved or relocated.
