This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

The incumbent shall function as the Diagnostic Radiology Technologist (DRT) in Cath lab and special procedure areas including interventional radiology cases performed in the Cath Lab and is responsible for the operation of highly complex equipment as well as technical and patient care duties.. Include but are not limited to: - Supports physicians or medical professionals in using diagnostic instruments, equipment and accessories. - Sets up equipment and supplies pre-procedure. - Scrubs in on cardiac catheterizations, arteriograms, and temporary/permanent pacemakers. - Assists with IABP (Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump) and insertion of transvenous pacemakers in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. - Assists with closure devices and performs removal of both arterial and venous sheaths by maintaining pressure until hemostasis is achieved. - Collects data for performance improvement. - Assures that all Radiation safety rules and regulations are observed to safeguard patients, operator and fellow employees against unnecessary radiation. - Assists with orientation and training of staff in diagnostic instruments, equipment and accessories used in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Cardiology Procedures and Interventional Radiology areas. - Ensures proper connection for dynamic electrocardiography scanning of the tracing of various ware components and/or pattern of wave components. - Records all homodynamic data during right and left catheterization including coronary angiograms. - Processes and edits all studies or other recording media as assigned and scans reports into patient's medical record - Coordinates equipment maintenance and repair with BME. - Locates and assembles equipment needed for diagnostic procedures and complex peripheral procedures. - Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of the appropriate physician. - Schedules procedures and coordinates appointments with other services as appropriate. - Maintains specialized supplies pertaining to the equipment and instruments used in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Cardiology Procedure areas. - Assists with peripheral angiogram studies in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab with complex interventions such as stenting, angioplasty, atherectomies, thrombectomies, coiling, etc. - Assembles and assists with various, specialized, complex vascular devices for Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO). - Scrubs and assists with complex peripheral radiology procedures such as Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunting (TIPS), complex fistulagrams with stenting/angioplasty, peripheral coiling in complex procedures such as arteriovenous (A-V) malformations and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repairs both in the Operating Room and Special Procedure areas. - Assists with radiographic procedures and operation of C-arm including preparation and administration of contrast media and picture archiving. - Pre-cleans Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as outlined in the standard operating procedure for the specific model. - Maintains competency for all applicable reusable medical equipment. - Assists in education of patients and families regarding procedures and post-catheterization care. - Provides radiation safety education to the Cath Lab staff. - Maintains the radiation dosimeter badges. Incumbent has other duties with-in the department related to and/or doing procedures. - Takes phone calls from patients, their families, physicians and other Medical Centers to assist with appointments, reports and results.. - Completes consults and progress notes. - Checks the lead for integrity on a required schedule in an electronic system and report any abnormalities to the radiation safety officer. - Maintains implantable inventory in the TrackCore System. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Loss of Credential: An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain certification within two years, or who fails to maintain the required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of of employment. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE) English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). Grade Determinations: Employees are trained to work in one or more difficult and complex modalities performing procedures related to these modalities as well as performing general diagnostic procedures. At this grade level, any assignment in a single modality must demonstrate significant complexity. Such assignments are unique, perhaps with expert specialization in complex areas of radiologic technology, Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) regulations, and intermediate QM type duties within the program. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-09) level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Knowledge, skills, and abilities at the GS-09 level are: Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities: In addition to the above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following GS-10 level technical KSAs: 1. Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. *2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. *3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. *4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. *5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of non-supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed. Physical Requirements: VA Directive and Handbook 5019.Lifting up to 40 lbs. light carrying under 20 lbs. ability to reposition patients, use of fingers and both hands required, walking 2 hours, standing 2 hours, both eyes required for depth perception, ability to distinguish shades of color, hearing (aid permitted), emotional and mental stability, near and far vision of 20/40 or better (corrective lenses permitted) The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders; Emotional and Mental Stability: The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. Work Environment: The position may at times involve exposure to a work environment that may include intermittent excessive noise, dust, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around moving objects or vehicles. The incumbent may also be exposed to infective patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders; Emotional and Mental Stability: The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
