This position performs and oversees clerical work supporting the Compensation and Pension department. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model such as VA medical benefits to eligible active-duty service members currently awaiting medical discharge and Veterans undergoing disability evaluations.
Duties
Major Duties:
The AMSA position has a pivotal role within the VHA and VBA disability evaluation process.
Schedules outpatient clinic appointments using Veterans Health Information Systems. Uses VHA Directives and established business rule to schedule Appointments for Veterans.
Performs work involving the collection, compilation and/or tracking of data and statistical information for C&P administrative clinical operations.
Reviews documents and reports for completeness and enters pertinent information into an automated tracking system.
Prepares, executes, and/or tracks program specific information, such as scheduling issues, scheduling new consults, phone performance, encounter completion, troubleshoots with providers and patients, assists with training new AMSAs, monitors clinical closing and makes calls to patients when providers are out.
Ensures completion of charts and encounters daily; uses software applications to draw information in order to prepare/assist in preparation of reports and verification of data.
Responds to questions from patient and providers concerning services.
Makes appropriate referral of questions concerning patient's condition.
Responds to technical questions regarding patient rights, responsibilities, and medical eligibility for care.
Uses variety of VHA/VBA databases, such as but not limited to: VISTA, CAPRI, CPRS, VBMS, VIRP, and EAS, to extract, categorize and collate specific patient or provider metrics required to manage the department processes.
The AMSA is able to independently manage position responsibilities with little supervision as well as set priorities and deadlines adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs.
Provides administrative support to all administrative and clinical staff throughout the clinic area.
Requires a practical knowledge of well established medical record procedures, directives, and principles to carry out a variety of medical record functions such as analysis, quality assurance, and compiling data.
Time Keeping Duties Serves as unit timekeeper or alternate timekeeper for the Primary Care Service Line.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English
Experience and Education:
Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position;
or
Education: One year above high school;
or
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Certification: None required
Grade Determinations:
GS-6 Advanced Medical Support Assistant. In addition to the basic requirements, requires a minimum of one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. In addition, you must have experience which demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g. medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nursing staff) to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met.
Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations..
Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels, [as well as resolving patient concerns.
Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow, and patient support care administrative functions to include, but not limited to appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, provider availability, etc.
Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.
