This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DIB-MRTFB to recruit for positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: To code all inpatient medical encounters for a large Military Medical Centers (MMC) with numerous medical specialties, with the 96th MDG, Eglin AFB.
A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.
Advance leave accrual may be authorized.
Duties
Codes inpatient encounters at a Military Medical Center (with numerous medical specialties.)
Reviews clinical documentation and assigns appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes for inpatient, inpatient professional rounds, External Resources Sharing Agreement (ERSA).
Identifies inconsistencies or discrepancies among medical documentation involved in coding encounters.
Reviews encounter and/or record documentation to identify inconsistencies or discrepancies that may cause inaccurate coding, medico-legal re-percussions or impacts quality patient care.
Provides coding and documentation advisory services to medical staff on an individual or group basis.
Codes medical records using the appropriate International Classification of Diseases (ICD- latest version) diagnosis and/or procedural codes, American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Basic Life Support Certification is required.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- Tuberculosis Test is required.
- Coding certification, to include ICD-10-CM/PCS proficiency, from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is desired.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience performing the following which includes: Review and code medical records using the following guidelines, International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification (ICD- 10-CM), Procedural Coding System (ICD-10-PCS), American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG's), or other code taxonomies for all Inpatient facility encounters. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
