About the Position: To serve as a medical records technician performing records work concerned with reviewing, analyzing, processing, and maintaining medical records for the 96th MDG Eglin AFB, Pt Admin.
This is a Direct Hire Solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in Department of Defense (DoD) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
Reviews, codes, and analyzes medical records and identifies inaccurate entries and/or omissions.
Plans, organizes, and accomplishes the review, analysis and coding of medical records utilizing a variety of means to identify coding requirements.
Analyzes patient records that may include multiple injuries, diseases, and/or medical/surgical procedures, determining both accuracy and completeness.
Reviews medical records for completeness and performs coding of diagnoses and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures based on record documentation.
Uses classification software to assign clinical codes for reimbursement and data analysis.
Releases medical information.
Upon receipt of written requests, research, analyze and abstract pertinent information from records that may include multiple injuries, diseases, and/or medico/surgical procedures and reports findings to requestors.
Makes release determinations based upon application of the Privacy Act and other directives covering confidentiality.
Verifies validity and entitlement to access of information prior to release.
Upon request by medical committees and staff, provides abstracts and/or assists in the identification and/or review of health data statistics for use by the professional staff in evaluating/planning health care.
Identifies codes that will yield information desired and suggests avenues of exploration if appropriate.
Extracts selected information from computerized database and reports findings. Compiles medical care and census data for statistical reports on diseases treated, surgery performed, and use of hospital beds.
Uses multiple office automation software with varied functions to produce a wide range of documents, formats, etc.
Specific processing functions involved require a varying number and sequence of steps and use of different functions from one assignment to another.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The incumbent must have the ability to type a minimum of 40 WPM.
- All employees assigned to a MTF are required to be screened for applicable immunizations regardless of series, based on occupational risk, and are subject to missing/required immunizations IAW AR 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience and/or educational requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Perform medical records, administrative and clerical duties in support of the medical facility; Initiate, locate, annotate, update, and file patient medical records to include inserting additional forms and charts, filing results of treatments, recording a variety of doctor's orders or notes on various charts and records, filing results of laboratory tests, x-rays, and other procedures, recording medical data (temperatures, blood pressure, etc.), and recording other documentation as required by the medical staff; receive, direct, relay and/or answer incoming and outgoing telephone calls, intercom, electronic messages, messages, and patients/visitors; arrange and schedule medical appointments and determines patient eligibility for services; interview patients who request medical examination/treatments and to obtain pertinent information; review documentation to obtain additional information and determines eligibility for treatment; multiple office automation software with varied functions to produce a wide range of documents, formats, etc. Applicant should have experience in most of the preceding examples. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
Proficiency Required:This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
