The Prosthetic Clerk (Office Automation) is assigned to the Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service {PSAS) at the VA Caribbean Healthcare Systems. As a Prosthetic Clerk, the employee performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment given to patients such as, receiving patients, processing and issuing of DME, delivering items and mailing items when necessary.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Mailing out requested equipment and recording the same in the Prosthetic's patient record.
Providing education to the patient and caregiver on wheelchair assembly/usage and care.
Scheduling of appointment and travel; completion of appropriate forms and referrals as required.
Operating the prosthetic software package to maintain a detailed and accurate accounting of all transactions.
Examining clinical computerized health records to determine legal eligibility and medical entitlement for orthotic/prosthetic items and services.
Responsible for data collection used in preparing and submitting numerous reports
Receiving and reviewing diverse types of correspondence/documents to determine delivery locations.
Receiving and directing patients and visitors, answering routine inquires and making appropriate referral or questions concerning patient's durable medical equipment, personnel and administrative matters.
Issuing, assembling and providing written and verbal instruction on the use and maintenance of durable medical equipment to the patient and or family members.
Assessing eligibility, medical justification and diagnosis for the device/item being requested.
Handling patient complaints calmly, swiftly, effectively and professionally while adhering to guiding policies and regulations.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-5 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING:
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English and Spanish in order to meet the requirements of this position.
~AND~
TYPING PROFICIENCY: This position requires the skills of a qualified typist. In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements, you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.
~AND~
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes utilizing various computer programs including Microsoft applications to interpret and input data; performing word processing/typing tasks; answering phone calls and assisting with inquires; screening and directing patients to the appropriate staff member. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.)

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience to meet the total requirements for this position. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE AND COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The position requires frequent sitting. Standing, bending and walking to use the office equipment required (copiers, facsimiles, calculators, dedicated computers) and the retrieving and filling of documents. May require lifting of no more than 70 pounds and the handling copier paper or other equipment. Employee may have to walk some distance while directing patients to the proper area for their care.
