This position Is located at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois, working in Emergency Room/Emergency Department. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the care and treatment of emergency room patients and administer emergent care to patients both In the Emergency Room and throughout the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center under the supervision of the doctors and nurses.
Duties
Major duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Interviews and screens patients for life threatening injuries or illnesses.
Obtains vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respirations, weight, height and/or orthostatic vital signs), Accu-Checks blood sugars/glucose monitoring.
Interview skills to obtain chief compliant and history of present illness, past pertinent patient health/medication history.
Perform sterile procedures to include, but not limited to urinary catheter placement (indwelling and/or straight-catheter.
Conducts point-of-care blood sugar testing using finger-stick technique or drawing from intravenous access site for continuous glucose monitoring or baseline testing, collection of blood and specimen laboratory tests, splinting, wound care, cerumen impaction removal, eye irrigation, orthopedic immobilization, and cervical spinal stabilization.
Collects, labels, and transports patient specimens to include, venous blood, urine, stool/stool guaiac, throat cultures, wound, and mucous specimens. Irrigates, cleans, and dresses wounds maintaining sterile and clean fields.
Manually assists with lifting and positioning of patients; assists wheelchair-bound and patients with impaired ambulation out of vehicles.
Cleans and prepares patients, room, supplies, and equipment for use in emergent procedures and prepares specimens for transport to laboratory. Cleans and resupplies exam rooms in between patient uses.
Proficient in electronic charting, computer, and windows programs, telephone etiquette, answering and receiving telephone calls, and paging duty personnel.
Work Schedule: 7:15 pm - 7:45 am with rotation to include weekends and holidays.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/26/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience requiring application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques related to the position and includes, but is not limited to: performing duties for a medical practice, assisting in the treatment of an emergency room setting, providing patient education, and documenting patient data. OR,
Education: Successfully completed one-half year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent), in course matter with a major that included courses directly related to the work of the Health Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (Transcripts Required).
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond successfully completed one-half year of graduate education (9 semester hours or equivalent), in course matter with a major that included courses directly related to the work of the Health Technician position? This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (Transcripts Required).

Physical Requirements: The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.
