The Food Service Worker is responsible for performing food services, simple food preparation and maintenance duties within the hospital. This position preforms tasks that require knowledge and application of special food service procedures.
Duties

Sets up food service counters, tables and stands with designated good and non-food items.
Make a variety of fruit and vegetable salads and desserts, which require following recipes and the combination of a number of ingredients.
Performs a variety of duties to the maintenance of sanitary conditions within the area to which assigned. Such duties include:
Operates dishwashing machine with responsibility for maintaining water and detergent levels; loading, unloading and stacking or storing dishes and silverware; cleaning dishwasher inside and out.
Hand washes and scrubs pots, pans and other utensils.
Cleans kitchen and serving equipment, tables, chairs, storage and dining areas, walls, floors and other surfaces; and disposes of waste.
Qualifications

Your background must demonstrate experience in the ability to prepare food without more than normal supervision. Ability to interpret instructions, read, understand and follow written and oral instructions. Knowledge of cleanliness, neatness and sanitation in a hospital setting. Ability to use and care for kitchen utensils and equipment. (Screen out element)
A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.
Physical Effort: Food service workers at this grade level perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds) unassisted (e.g., pushing small carts of dirty dishes) and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 9 kilograms (20 pounds) (e.g., filling beverage dispensers) with the assistance of other workers. Some food service workers at this level may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They also may be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds).
Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
