You will serve as a AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVAL FACILITIES ENG COMMAND HAWAII.
Wage ranges:
Salary Range of the WG-05: $24.46-$28.53
Salary Range of the WG-08: $31.14-$36.31
Duties
You will diagnose, locate, and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large, complex heating, ventilation; air conditioning, and refrigeration systems (HVAC).
You will test for refrigerant leaks and use a refrigerant recovery/recycling station, to Environmental Protection Agency standards to safely reclaim, recycle, and store the refrigerant before repairs can be made.
You will conduct visual and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment, and by exploration of probable reasons for equipment failure.
You will perform maintenance, calibration, modification, installation, repair and replacement of analog and direct digital controls (DDC) systems and equipment.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR certification.
- The incumbent will be required to possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification exam (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this position.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain current certifications in Confined Space Safety, Backflow Prevention, and Refrigerant Recovery.
Qualifications
This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: You must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification exam (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this wage grade.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

To qualify for the WG-8: 1) Diagnosing, locating, and repairing malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (HVAC) such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, cooling coils, air handlers, water control valves, and air dampers; 2) Using trade tools and test equipment such as voltage, amperage, and ohm meters, electronic refrigerant leak detectors, temperature gauges, capacitors, and analyzers; 3) Following safety procedures and practices when repairing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion.
To qualify for the WG-5: 1) Preparing the worksite setting up scaffolds, ladders, and stands; 2) Examining, specific task in support of higher level work in compliance with specific instructions and 3) Follows all guidelines and procedures to use common hand tools and portable power tools associated with the air conditioning trade.
