Job opening: Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Supervisor

Salary: $39 - 46 per hour

About the Position: This position serves as the first line supervisor over the Rail Equipment Branch of the U.S. Army Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command in Southport, North Carolina. Incumbent prescribes methods, procedures, priorities, and time requirements to subordinates and oversees the day-to-day direction of a well-established operation.

Duties

Prescribe methods, procedures, priorities, and time requirements. Oversee incumbent’s day-to-day direction of a well-established operation. Spot-check work in progress and on completion to provide assistance when problems occur. Approve invoices and maintain administration records, performance agreements and compliance inspection reports. Explain work requirements, methods, and procedures. Maintain production reports and records. Review instructions received and ensured arrangements are made for adequate personnel, materials, and equipment at the work site. Maintain terminal rail equipment, container cranes, and way equipment. Consult with supervisor the need for major changes in procedure or sequence-based work progress. Determine employees' training needs and initiate recommendations to provide necessary training. Initiate proposals for formal disciplinary action as needed.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position requires pre-employment Financial Disclosure Statement OGE Form 450 and annually thereafter in accordance with DoD Directive 5500-7-R.

This includes the ability to perform common Supervisory tasks to include working as a lead person in a group or team using standard procedures to perform maintenance of terminal rail equipment, way equipment and container cranes. With direction, incumbents are able to understand management reports relating to production control, work order status, and equipment status. Incumbents work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading)Ability to Lead or SuperviseAbility to Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)Troubleshooting Physical Effort: Work requires bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. May work on top of and under equipment in cramped and awkward positions. Strenuous work is required while standing, lying, and sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts and equipment. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, may work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hardhats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items maybe uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods.
