You will serve as a Defense Litigation Support Specialist (DLSS) in the Office of the Judge Advocate General (OJAG) of Defense Service Office (DSO) WEST. The duty station is San Diego, CA.

Duties

You will assist assigned detailed military defense counsel by conducting an expert analysis of defense cases to determine appropriate case preparation steps and take individual actions in pursuit of those steps. You will compile and analyze a wide range of information, documents, photographs, and other related items relevant to the defense case. You will locate and interview witnesses and law enforcement personnel, prepare written statements or results of interviews of witnesses, and conduct witness background check or other pertinent research of witnesses. You will be required, when appropriate, to provide testimony at a court or preliminary hearing relating to one or more of the assigned tasks. You will produce reports outlining a case plan, weekly status reports on various case actions, reports detailing actions, summary of witness interviews, signed witness statements, and other related reports as requested.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Top Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You may be required to perform occasional travel

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following experience as a criminal defense investigator: 1) Conducting an independent analysis of a criminal defense case to determine necessary investigative steps; 2) Investigating, planning, and proactively and independently undertake comprehensive defense strategies; 3) Locating, interviewing and conducting background research on witnesses to include social media research, open source information, visits, diagrams, and photograph crime scenes; 4) Testifying on behalf of the defense as a defense witness about investigative steps; and 5) Coordinating with defense counsel on investigative steps and case development.
