The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist within Diagnostic Imaging Service functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs [at the GS-9 level and below] to provide a full range of general radiologic imaging exams with a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor.
Duties
Observes all Radiation and MRI safety guidelines set forth by the ACR and Medical Center
Trains and directs work of lower grade technologists and students
Coordinates flow of patients through the radiology department. Assures that all imaging modalities have the appropriate coverage in their section.
Supports daily work rotation assignments based on current imaging requests
Tracks information, makes recommendations to supervisor that influence workflow and technologist coverage
Resolves minor complaints from customers
Performs routine and complex examinations and procedures
Operates both fixed and mobile radiographic equipment
Prepares and administers contrast agents per radiologist guidance
Prepares room, equipment and ensures all materials are available for patient care
Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self.
Oversees established holiday/call rotations and assures coverage in each section is properly assigned. Develops and implements appropriate call calendars for department coverage (if/when applicable).
Oversee lead apron/garment inspections
Prepares request and consults in Vista and CPRS
Ensures all supplies and equipment are ready for use
Transports Patients
Performs image archival and case editing of procedures
Coordinates, tracks and ensures all equipment maintenance, repair and installation is completed
Ensures that all MR safety screening regulations and practices are followed
Prepares room, equipment, power injector, coils and all materials needed for patient care
Performs image quality review
Develops/maintains spreadsheet of image quality review
Ensures all imaging modalities' Service Logs, Reusable Medical Equipment, Physics Testing and Lead Inspection Reports are complete and current

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R)
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel.
Preferred Experience:
Using computerized health record
Knowledge of basic MRI Physics
Knowledge of cross-sectional human anatomy
Ability to start IV's
Grade Determinations: GS-10, Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist.
Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
i. Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work.
ii. *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints.
iii. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures.
iv. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.

Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing and walking. There is some bending, lifting, and carrying of light items such as cassettes or digital detectors. There is occasional moderate exertion such as lifting multi-exposure cassettes or digital detectors or assisting other technologist in lifting and positioning patients. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees or patient lift team.
