About the Position: This position is located in the Department of Medicine, Gastroenterology Service at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC).

Duties
Serve as a Medical Instrument Technician (Gastroenterology) providing direct assistance to the staff gastroenterology physician during invasive gastrointestinal procedures.
Prepare patients, equipment, and procedure area to perform invasive procedures.
Assist with all types of dilations, esophageal or colonic stent placements, and endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies.
Receive and positions patients for various endoscopic procedures and provides an explanation of the procedures.
Select, set up, adjust, and operate equipment for designated procedures, and calibrates equipment as necessary.
Assist the Gastroenterologist or the GI Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic and emergency procedures.
Evaluate condition of patient in order to determine treatment procedures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position may be designated essential during inclement weather or other appropriate emergency conditions.
- This position requires rotating shift work and on-call work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations and for evidence of tuberculosis unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time

Specialized experience: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. One year of specialized experience which includes: preparing procedure area and instruments for medical procedures, assisting the Physician during routine or diagnostic procedures and performing basic maintenance and sterilization methods to clean instruments and equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06)

Education: At least one full year of graduate level education from an accredited college or university with major courses of study in fields such as Nursing, or Medical Assisting. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
