The Medical Technician performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of technical functions to include blood-drawing procedures, assisting patients and specimen processing. They provide assistance of a technical specialized or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Taking and labeling specimens.
Prepares drawing site, removes tourniquets.
Performs standard diagnostic tests and procedures.
Instructs patients on specimen collection.
Positions patients for procedures.
Performs special drawing procedures (bleeding times, collecting times).
Maintains records for routine patient test or laboratory transactions.
Receives samples for testing, labels specimens, centrifuges and processes samples, and distributes them accordingly.
Verifies identifiers and identifies unusual conditions or discrepancies that may cause erroneous test results.
Receives/directs calls and messages.
Maintains laboratory facilities and equipment.
Controls and maintains supplies and records.
Coordinates the flow of specimens throughout and across laboratories.
Work Schedule: Day and evening shifts, with rotating weekends.

Education and Training for GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled.
This position also includes a Selective Placement Factor (SPF) (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.
In addition to meeting the above Selective Place Factor (SPF) and Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR), applicants must also meet the experience and/or directly related education relevant to this position. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Determining laboratory test requirements to include the selection and use of appropriate equipment and materials; Venipuncture specimen collection techniques (phlebotomy, venipuncture, finger sticks, urine, sputum, tissue, etc.); Selecting appropriate sample collection sites; Monitoring patients; Laboratory specimen storage; Clerical and record keeping; File and retrieve laboratory test information manually and electronically; Data entry and retrieval to include basic accessioning and specimen identification; Specimen processing for in-house and referral lab testing; Specimen handling precautions. Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Physical Requirements: The physical demands are primarily standing for long periods of time and walking, but also some bending, lifting and carrying light items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity.
