Serves as a Medical Technician in the Orlando VA Medical Center Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in a large medical system with state of art instrumentation and methodologies for laboratory analysis. The incumbent performs both routine and specialized testing as assigned (including but not limited to, laboratory testing in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology and serology sections).

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major Duties: Performs work in a clinical laboratory where the majority of the work is in support of patient diagnosis and/or treatment. Performs work, and applies practical knowledge where needed involving routine and specialized tests and examinations using the techniques of medical laboratory practices in the chemistry hematology coagulation urinalysis, immunohematology, immunochemistry, serology and microbiology. Implements and follows proper protocols in receiving/collecting sorting, recording, storing and/or shipping of clinical laboratory specimens so that appropriate testing/diagnostic procedure can be performed. Maintains laboratory in a clean and safe condition according to agency and accreditation requirements. Accepts and/or documents incoming patient specimens using the designated computer {or backup system) as per established policies and procedures. Processes specimens and selects appropriate procedures based on knowledge of the type of specimens, patient information, and resources available in the laboratory. Controls physical conditions and responds to time factors to ensure that the physiological state of the specimen and the quality of patient care is maintained. Reports all specimen problems according to established guidelines. Performs a variety laboratory test that be established or new and involve very fine distinctions in analytical methods. Enters results into hospital computer system verifying accuracy, completeness, and validity in the testing process. Performs other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. English Language Proficiency In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. Minimum Qualification Requirements Possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal service. (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR Possess at least one (1) full year of successfully completed graduate education (18 semester hours) from an accredited college or university with course work directly related to the work of this position (i.e., chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc.) may be substituted for the experience required. OR Possess a combination of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond 9 semester hours) and specialized experience to meet the total experience requirements. This education must include courses directly related to the work of the position (as described above) and obtained from an accredited college or university. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, or lifting up to 40 labs. In many situations, the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. There may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination or good color vision.
