These positions serve as the Lead Medical Technician for either the Lake Nona Campus or the Lake Baldwin CBOC in the Outpatient Phlebotomy/Specimen/Processing section of the Orlando VAMC Clinical Laboratory in Orlando, FL.
Duties

Major duties:
Assigns and adjusts work assignments to balance the workload among employees and assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload and monitors productivity.
Monitors workflow and make day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise,
Monitors patient waiting times.
Gives on the job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices.
Assists the Supervisor in personnel matters such as leave schedules, weekly work schedules, timekeeping and attendance certification
Participates in job interviews and selection of applicants for vacant positions.
Estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work, and maintain records of patient call backs, customer service issues and problem occurrence reports.
Oversees ordering, managing supplies, for phlebotomy and specimen processing sections of the clinical lab.
Utilizes computer to acknowledge specimen receipt and orders and accessions all specimens correctly.
Phlebotomizes patients, using aseptic venipuncture, on the inpatient wards and in the phlebotomy outpatient clinic, always assessing the patient's status relative to his/her age specific needs, checking patient identification, and selecting the appropriate tubes for the test required.
Explains collection procedures to patients who must collect specimens, i.e., urine for routine urinalysis, urine for culture and sensitivity, 24 hour for quantitative urine chemistries.
Monitors and maintains outpatient phlebotomy areas, assuring appropriate and adequate materials are sufficient for required services in a safe manner.
Assists physicians, nursing staff, veteran patients, and visitors in the resolution of questions and problems related to specimens and/or test information and/or general information pertaining to Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service policies or referring these to appropriate staff.
Utilizes safety devices and apparel appropriate to a variety of situations and follows universal precautions and infection control guidelines and procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Lake Nona Campus Monday-Friday 9:30am-6:00pm and Lake Baldwin Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Qualifications
This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration.
The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients. (This experience must be documented in your resume.)

In addition to the requirements listed above, the following is also required:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the Lead Medical Technician position. Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. At this level, specialized experience should include experience performing a variety of relatively standardized tests, examinations, and determinations. The procedures and techniques are well-established but involve many meticulous sequential steps to complete a test; and following written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week.

EDUCATION: Successfully completed at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a Bachelor's degree) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Medical Technician - Phlebotomy position such as chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

COMBINATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Lead Medical Technician position such as chemistry, biological sciences, hematology, microbiology, serology, etc. and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular physical exertion, such as standing for long periods of time, bending at the waist, walking and sitting at a computer terminal, and lifting light to moderately heavy loads may exceed 25 pounds.
