You will serve as a CHEMIST in the QUALITY ASSURANCE DEPARTMENT, LATORATORY DIVISION, ANALYTICAL and ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMICAL BRANCH (Code 134.4) of PEARL HARBOR NSY AND IMF.

Duties

You will have knowledge of chemical principles, theories, practices and methodology sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in the chemical and physical analysis and testing of various substances. You will provide information pertinent to a variety of programs and problems involving chemical analysis for which established methods are not substantially applicable, inconclusive, greatly variable and sometimes unrelated. You will have a significant amount of professional laboratory experience with a variety of instruments/samples in order to provide the level of authoritative responses and complex analytical solutions required at this level of expertise. You will be assigned the analysis of materials that are problematical or where conventional methods and method adjustments have produced inconclusive or contradictory results. You will use your extensive knowledge and experience of analytical methods and instrumentation to develop the best analytical approach to the problem. You will plan and conduct chemical and instrumental studies of a very complex and difficult nature in support of regulatory ship repair requirements.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional chemist conducting investigations, analysis, testing, and interpretation of the composition, physical and chemical properties, molecular structure and chemical reactions of substances in a shipyard laboratory to support the safety and efficiency of naval activities. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
