You will serve as a Painter in the MRO Production Department, Production Lines Division of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST. This announcement uses the Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will be responsible for entire surface preparations and finish coatings, certifying completed work with artisan certification stamp. You will process finished products according to existing directives with minimum supervision. You will provide assistance and training in technical phases of the paint trade to lower level workers and/or helpers. You will determine the proper method, techniques, materials, and device needed to paint aircraft, engine, and other components. You will apply paint with a spray gun, brush, or roller maintaining proper techniques and close tolerance requirements. You will apply appropriate methods to tint, tone, match, and blend coating materials, add various agents retardants, drying agents, and combine coating mixtures to get the proper color, texture, consistency, and drying state.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position requires corrected vision as eye Strain may occur from prolonged work on small parts, near vision correctable at Jaeger 2 at 14" binocular, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 or better.
  • Physical exertion requires heavy lifting over 40 pounds and carrying of objects up to 40 pounds.
  • This position requires working at heights up to 40 feet.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. I have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Reading and understanding specifications, sketches, blueprints, technical directives, manuals, and shop orders, to obtain information on surfaces to be coated; 2) Utilizing appropriate trade related clothing, equipment and breathing apparatus; 3) Demonstrating skills in the proper removal methods of old paint, rust, corrosion, dirt so that coating materials adhere properly to surfaces; 4) Exhibiting skills in sanding, featheredging existing coatings, and the knowledge of selecting proper grit abrasives necessary to ensure adequate substrate smoothness prior to the finish application.
