This position is in the Facilities & Engineering Service at the Loch Raven VA Medical Center, VA Maryland Health Care System and supports the facility and adjoining CBOCs. The purpose of the position is to perform plumbing/pipefitter work that includes removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems; measuring, cutting, bending, and threading pipe and tile; installing and performing related straightforward plumbing/pipefitter work.

Duties

Major Duties May Include: The incumbent is responsible for pipefitting on patient wards and administrative areas, which includes inspections, maintenance, repair and installation of all pipes related to steam and heating, hydraulic, nitrogen, and oxygen systems, and vacuum systems; and maintenance and repair of heating elements, traps and associated valves and piping. Plans and lays out assembly of pipe sections and systems including related equipment, fixtures and devices for new installation, alteration and repairs from shop drawing, sketches, and building plans. Plans and lays out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment. The incumbent installs and repairs water, medical gas, compressed air, and other plumbing and piping systems and equipment such as hot water heaters, pressure reducing valves, backflow preventers, hydronic pumps, sewage injection systems, storm water injection systems, drinking fountains, dishwashers, sprinkler systems, waterless urinals, showers, and disposal units. Performs routine repetitive tasks of preventative maintenance actions such as oiling, greasing, changing sprinkler heads, couplings, clean filters, clean coils, flushing strainers, testing/inspections of mixing valves, water sampling, periodic water temperature readings, etc. as assigned or to manufactures standards. Performs a variety of tasks on an as needed basis involving the installation, modification and repairs to new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems, and performs other related duties as assigned. Completes work assigned orally and through work orders assigned by supervisor. Work performed utilized building plans and blueprints. The employee tests systems and equipment after completing work. The supervisor checks work to see that it meets accepted trade standards. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7am-3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD233500 Physical Requirements: The employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard to reach places. The employee handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally items may weigh more than 50 pounds.
