This position is located in the Office of the Chief of Surgery and the VISN Chief Surgical Consultant at the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center in Miami Florida, and supports the mission to care for our Veterans with compassion and excellence. The Staff Assistant is charged with providing administrative and analytical support to the Chief as well as the professional and administrative staff members within the Office of the Chief of Surgery.
Duties
The Staff Assistant primary responsibility is to provide administrative leadership to staff at VISN 8 facilities who provide surgical care to veterans in a variety of settings including Acute Care, Same Day and Ambulatory Surgery. Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Performs work involving data collection, compilation, and/or tracking and providing statistical information.
Maintains the VSCS/Surgical Chiefs calendar and schedules appointments, coordinates meetings, and/or schedules conferences.
Reviews, organizes, and prepares raw data reports related to surgical performance measures within VISN 8.
Prepares, executes, and/or tracks program specific information, such as FOIA requests, congressional inquiries, grants, cooperative agreements, and/or contracts within an organizational unit.
Serves as ADPAC, PATS and TMS coordinator for Operative Care Service.
Assist in the acquisition, development and coordination of program resource materials and personnel.
Plans and implements a diverse program of educational activities to broaden own scope of proactive knowledge and expertise.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/07/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS-7 in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience includes but are not limited to: Providing administrative support in a hospital, clinic, or outpatient/inpatient medical facility; Data collection, data retrieval using a variety of different programs/software, data computation and statistical data analysis; Utilizing Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA) and the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), or like medial record systems; providing information on Veteran's Rights and Benefits Programs; Experience using Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Office. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D., if related. Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond a bachelor degree.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items like papers or books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
