The Smithsonian Institution (SI) is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo.  This position is in the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is responsible for ecological and environmental research education.

Duties

The Biologist or Physical Postdoctoral Scientist is responsible for performing scholarly research and participate in making contributions to the biological, ecological, physical, or chemical fields of science.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet both the Basic Requirement and Specialized experience. GS-0401: BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist. A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. GS-1301: BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist. A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience, or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the specialized experience listed below: GS-09 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience researching, investigating oyster reef ecology, urban estuarine ecology, or marine biodiversity conservation, or related subject area. OR Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such degree. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
