The Smithsonian Institution (SI) is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo.  This position is in the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is responsible for ecological and environmental research and education.

Duties

The Research Environmental Biologist is responsible for planning and conducting novel research on environmental stressors, with priority focus on, but not limited to socio-environmental systems, restoration, ecophysiology, biogeography, biodiversity and ecosystem function.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification Requirements: A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must submit a copy of your unofficial college transcripts for verification to be considered. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS-13 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as conducting research at the forefront of environmental biology and ecology in a changing world, including areas such as climate change, invasive species, habitat degradation, or biodiversity loss and their impact on ecosystems, ecological communities, or coupled natural-human systems. Additional qualifications include securing competitive research funding from internal or external sources, publishing significant data-rich papers with regional or national relevance, presenting research findings to both scientific and general audiences, and coordinating research projects and teams. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
