The Smithsonian Institution (SI) is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo.  This position is in the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is responsible for ecological and environmental research education.

Duties

The Supervisory Biologist is responsible for managing, supervising, leading and coordinating operations across the network in order to implement strategies that extend biological exploration, test scientific theories, and create new knowledge, primarily focused on marine biological science as it relates to invasive species.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification Requirements: YOU MUST HAVE THE BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR THIS POSITION. A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. or B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic qualification requirement above: GS-15 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as research investigating marine biology and ecology such as environmental science, geography, biology, or other related subject; obtaining research funding from competitive internal and/or extramural funding sources; authoring data-rich papers with national and/or international application and significance in peer-reviewed journals; presenting research results to scientific and other audiences; and leading or managing coordination of complex research projects and teams. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.Or a Combination of Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
