The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent office whose mission is to promote excellence, integrity, and accountability throughout the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In our dynamic environment, the OIG conducts investigations, audits, evaluations, and inspections to enhance program effectiveness and efficiency and to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and mismanagement in DHS programs and operations.
Duties
As an Inspector/Program Analyst in the Office of Inspections and Evaluations (I&E) at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG), you will conduct sensitive, impactful, and high-profile reviews of DHS programs and personnel, including in the areas of immigration, border and transportation security, disaster response, and civil liberties. I&E frequently conducts reviews at the request of Congress or senior DHS officials, and as a result of allegations of waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement received through our Office of Investigations. You qualify for the GS-11 grade level (starting salary $122,459) if you possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level performing duties such as:
Planning and conducting reviews in accordance with inspection/auditing standards, such as the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) Quality Standards for Inspection and Evaluations (Blue Book);
Independently researching sensitive and complex issues to determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies; collecting evidence through observations, interviews and data/file reviews.
Performing quantitative and qualitative analysis on program operations and/or procedures using various analytical methods and techniques; and preparing written, analytical work products requiring little revision and within short timeframes.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
