You will serve as a Firefighter in the Navy Fire & Emergency Services of NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY HAMPTON ROADS. SALARY RANGE FOR GS-05: $38,162 - $49,615 SALARY RANGE FOR GS-04: $34,109 - $44,342

Duties

You will brief the public to promote a fire protection or prevention program. You will complete written reports and records on emergency services incidents, patients, drugs administered equipment, or supplies used You will detect the presence of potentially hazardous materials to maintain containment and control You will control and extinguish a fire during firefighting operations You will administer a fire prevention program for an organization.

Requirements

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to have and maintain a current valid United States drivers license.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZ-MAT spills, or possible explosions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions.

Qualifications

For GS-05 level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial volunteer, or governmental fire department brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Identifying, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Operating fire communications equipment; 5) Responding, controlling and containing hazardous materials incidents. 6) Identifying required modifications for fire protection, prevention, or response. For GS-04 level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial volunteer, governmental fire department brigade; 2) Assisting in rescue operations; 3) Assisting in identifying, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Operating fire communications equipment. 5) Assisting in responding, controlling and containing hazardous materials incidents; 6) Assisting in fire protection and prevention or response. ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications at the GS-5 level: Fire I, Fire II, and HAZMAT Awareness and HAZMAT Operations. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications you will be rated ineligible. Education

Applicants that do not meet the specialized experience as described above may qualify with education or a combination of experience and education, as follows:

For GS-05: Have successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study leading to a bachelor degree.

Have a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience.

Your percentage of the required education plus your percentage of the required experience equals one hundred percent.

For GS-04: Completed a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study.
