You will serve as a Supervisory Firefighter (Assistant Chief) in the Fire and Emergency Services Subdivision of Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Duties

You will assign work to subordinates based on priorities, difficulty of assignments, and capabilities of employees. You will prepare and approve fire reports and collect data. You will carry out disciplinary actions on subordinates when necessary. You will maintain adequate supplies and equipment while tracking funds expended to ensure budget is properly executed. You will direct a full range of firefighting duties. You will give direction, as required, and monitor ongoing efforts to identify and evaluate new hazards introduced to the area and to establish procedures for response teams involved in situations where these elements are present. You will perform other duties as assigned.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

Qualifications

GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: - Responding to emergency incidents and directing fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical resource (EMS) in immediate mitigation actions; - Leading and managing personnel in the delivery of basic life support and advanced life support, including supervision of ground ambulance transportation service; - Performing tactical decision making and good judgment; - Providing effective, professional, and outgoing customer service and interactions with the command, the general public and stakeholders; - Delivering accurate, effective, and professional oral and written communications, such as documentation of employee appraisals, internal written communications, briefs, procedures, explanatory papers, correspondence, and investigative/fire/EMS reports; AND - Performing and managing fire department collateral duties. GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: - Responding to emergency incidents and directing fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical resource (EMS) in immediate mitigation actions; - Leading personnel in the delivery of basic life support and advanced life support; - Providing effective, professional, and outgoing customer service and interactions with the command, the general public and stakeholders; AND - Delivering accurate, effective, and professional oral and written communications, such as documentation of employee appraisals, internal written communications, briefs, procedures, explanatory papers, correspondence, and investigative/fire/EMS reports. ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: HAZMAT Incident Commander, Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, CPR or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Life Support (EMT). These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement.
