The position is at the full performance level located at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Engineering Service, Equipment/Plumbing Team. The primary purpose of the position is to serve the Veteran under the supervision of the Supervisor, Equipment/Plumbing Team. The incumbent performs duties at the journeyman pipefitter level and will be able to perform the work of a journeyman plumber independently with little to no supervision.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The incumbent will be knowledgeable in plumbing systems and be able to troubleshoot, diagnose, plan the job, create a materials list and execute the work independently as well as working as part of a team.
Knowledge of plumbing, steam fitting, and mechanical skills.
Works on a variety of systems such as steam distribution, water supply, fire sprinklers, drainage, sewage, oxygen, medical air, vacuum and nitrous oxide distribution and storage as well as mechanical equipment and appliances.
Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation, of systems and equipment.
Uses tools and equipment such as pro-press pressing tools, Power chop saws, pipe threader, closet augers, sewer snakes, high pressure water jets, pneumatic tools and electric grinders.
Possess demonstrable knowledge of the plumbing code.
Install plumbing systems. Installs, modifies, and repairs systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope.
Determines and installs valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation systems.
Installs equipment by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, and seating, hooking up, and testing the equipment.
Overhauls and repairs flush, relief, globe, gate valves, temperature and pressure regulators, fire hydrants, and fire sprinklers.
Repairs heat exchangers, steam traps, strainers, etc., installs hangars and supports, insulates piping and equipment, and cores concrete for pipe penetrations.
Joins piping by soldering, brazing, welding, gluing, fusing, and mechanically.
Cuts and threads pipe, uses compression fitting, and flares and uses flare fittings.
Works as a team member and will assist other trades in emergency situations.
Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains high-temperature water and high-pressure piping systems such as hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam-heating, and steam- generating systems.
Installs and repairs such items as steam generators, vacuum, air, water, and condensate pumps, radiators, automatic and manual valves and flash and expansion tanks.
Sets up system routes, places and cuts route openings, installs regulating devices, and places hangers for proper pitch and elevation.
Determines and installs risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators in the combination needed
to support the pressures of the systems and that ensure the proper operation of the systems.
Reads and interprets blueprints, layout sketches, manufacturers' literature and specifications for sizing, estimating, installing, and repairing new or existing piping systems.
Replaces sections of pipe, repairs steam traps and relief and control valves.
Cuts, threads, and connects pipes by means of union, flanges, and sweating.
Fits pipe sections by screwing, bolting, brazing, welding, gluing, fusing, and soldering.
Tests systems and equipment for proper operation, circulation, flow, pressure, and leak-free joints.
Traces and troubleshoots pipe lines, systems, and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots.
Performs safety and preventive maintenance inspections of systems and equipment.
Work Schedule: Sunday-12:00pm-8:30pm. Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday-3:00pm-11:30pm
Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD11406A
Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to stoop, bend, pull, push, reach, and climb and must physically be able to carry a load in excess of 90 pounds. Works from scaffolds, ladders, and in hard to reach places.
Working Conditions: Incumbent is subject to burns, toxic odor, strains, cuts, and bruises. Work is done inside, outside, and in confined spaces and is often dirty, dusty, and greasy. Work locations include the interstitial spaces in Building 1, which had asbestos containing insulation throughout the space. Incumbent must be able to meet physical requirements to wear necessary protective equipment to work in this asbestos environment.
