The Nurse Practitioner position is located within the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institute of Minority Health & Health Disparities (NIMHD). Activities in NHLBI/DIR/CB incorporate both the clinical diagnosis and research-related activities within the guidelines of carefully defined and approved clinical research protocols. The incumbent is responsible for providing specialized nursing support during clinical research studies.

Duties

Independently provides medical evaluation and care of patients admitted to the outpatient clinic or other Clinical Center service in consultation; keeps complete, accurate medical documentation. Provides patient with pre- and post-procedure instructions and counseling; informs research physician of observations, problems or health concerns relative to patient. Interviews patients to obtain medical history, history of use of medication, previous related symptoms and non-related diseases, documents all information and observations. Assesses patients to determine the need for medical attention and orders special screening and developmental tests and lab tests. Reviews and interprets laboratory and other diagnostic test data and documents inpatient chart or record; actively participates in all clinical rounds and conferences. Participates in the development of new clinical research protocols providing expertise in experimental design relevant to practical patient care. Provides education, supervision and mentoring of students, trainees and colleagues when applicable.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner), GS-610 position, you must: Education Requirement: A. Have a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. NOTE: Degree from a Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. AND B. Have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). AND Licensure Requirement: C. Have a current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position. Additional Requirements: For the GS-12:In addition, in order to qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) position at the GS-610-12 level, you must have at least 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: predicting and analyzing trends in patient conditions and developing a patient management plan in response to the data obtained; securing health and developmental histories from patients or parents; recording findings and makes critical evaluation; performing invasive procedures (phlebotomy) and evaluating and interpreting findings; providing patient and family counseling and health education; and serving in formal or informal leadership positions, such as preceptor to graduate students and Nurse Practitioners new to the organization. For the GS-13:In addition, in order to qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) position at the GS-610-13 level, you must have at least 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing leadership in comprehensive nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members as a primary health resource; performing or requests special screening developmental tests, or laboratory tests and interpreting the results; collecting patient data, analyzing trends, interpreting results, and suggesting possible alterations to treatments according to research protocol; coordinates care of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings; and ensuring division adherence to ethical standards, protocol compliance, data management, and quality assurance processes. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
