This position provides supervision, management and support to the Education Division at the Center of Excellence for Suicide Prevention, VHA Finger Lakes Healthcare System. The mission of the COE is to prevent morbidity and mortality from suicidal behaviors among all Veterans by using a public health approach. The goal of the Education Division is to translate leading-edge suicide prevention findings into applied practice across a variety of Veteran-focused settings.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to the duties below:
The incumbent will serve as the direct line supervisor for a multidisciplinary team comprised of 1 Health System Specialist, 1 Health Science Specialist, and 1 Communication Specialist within the Center's Education and Research Dissemination Division.
As the supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for developing performance plans; conducting mid-year, ad hoc and annual performance appraisals; planning work to be accomplished by the Education division; establishing, monitoring, and adjusting short-term and long-term priorities; scheduling and assigning work to subordinates; advising and overseeing subordinates on work and administrative matters.
The incumbent will independently plan and execute projects that reflect the Center's mission and education goals either alone or in collaboration with other experts in his/her field. For example, the incumbent will develop and test novel strategies such as suicide prevention gatekeeper trainings and lethal means safety trainings targeted towards veteran-related populations to help identify and reduce risk for suicide.
The incumbent will establish collaboration(s) and partnerships with other VA Centers of Excellence/MIRECCs, the Department of Defense, and University Departments/ Programs to conduct innovative education/training projects in Veteran suicide prevention.
The position will help leadership oversee the quality and quantity of Center suicide prevention education and trainings and will engage in regular review of projects in the portfolio to improve products and dissemination.
Incumbent evaluates the needs for education programs and policies and guidance and makes recommendations to leadership.
The incumbent engages in program improvement by considering continuous input from multiple stakeholders and utilizes information to evaluate and improve the quality of programs and products and monitor program outcomes using data-driven processes.
The position is responsible for facilitating field evaluation of education needs throughout the Center, VISN and nationally, as indicated.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8AM-4:30PM

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some travel may be required. No other special physical demands are required of this work. The work may require additional hours to meet project deadlines and to devise corrective actions and solutions to unexpected technical and/or management situations. Reaching for supplies, lifting moderate items, as well as bending and filing are also necessary.

Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Designing, conducting, and evaluating education and training programs for adult learners; assigning or evaluating the work of others; utilizing a wide range of qualitative /quantitative as well as analytical/evaluative methods
There is no educational substitution for the GS-13 level.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
