Nurse Manager Sterile Processing Service (SPS): Reporting to the Chief Nurse Sterile Processing Service, the Nurse Manager SPS is responsible for assisting the Chief Nurse with the leadership, coordination, evaluation and performance of sterile processing, supply and product distribution that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities.

Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but not limited to the following: The Nurse Manager for the SPS will work closely with nursing and physician staff in the areas that use Reusable Medical Equipment (RME)//Reusable Medical Devices (RMD). The Nurse Manager is responsible for implementation of the Vision, Mission, and Values of the Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Health Care System within his/her defined areas of responsibility. He/she is fully engaged in the administrative and clinical nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision making and enhanced skills in nursing management/leadership. He/she is responsible for the day-to-day operations and provides input into the strategic planning process for the attainment of organizational goals. The Nurse Manager keeps staff informed of Clinical/Administrative goals through facilitating both vertical and horizontal communications in a timely manner. Assists with the oversight for the hospital's sterile processing and reusable medical equipment management, assuring needed resources are provided to clinical areas according to policy mandates. Responsible for working with the Chief Nurse SPS and the Associate Director for Patient Care Services with planning, organizing, directing, controlling, negotiating, and implementing cost effective processes, assuring the Operating Rooms and Procedural Areas have needed reusable medical devices (RMD). Ensures products selected maintain expected levels of quality, safety, clinical efficacy, as well as total cost performance. Collaborates with clinical, administrative, and managerial personnel to identify and resolve problems. In the absence of the Chief Nurse SPS, may assume certain duties as assigned. Responsible for the Quality Assurance Program, oversight of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and staff training programs at all levels for sterile processing, disinfecting processes, the non-reusable medical device/equipment program, and the reprocessing of reusable medical equipment (RME) and RMD throughout the healthcare system. Participates in assessing the environment to ensure the decontamination, high level disinfection/sterilization process, and pre-cleaning processes throughout the enterprise are in compliance with all Directives and guidelines. Nurse Manager SPS demonstrates an understanding of infection control and quality improvement processes associated with the educational, experiential, and competency requirements in the Nurse Quality Standards.- Responsible and accountable for leadership and management of nursing and non-nursing SPS staff. Participates in timely employee evaluations, timely maintenance of competency folders and continuous survey readiness. Plans and schedules ongoing production-oriented work and adjusts staffing levels or work procedures to accommodate resource allocation decisions. Responsible to maintain confidentiality of electronic, written and/or verbal patient/employee information. Demonstrate working practices that include adherence to Infection Control Standards and the safe use and operation of equipment. Maintains compliance with established policies and procedures of the Department of Health, Joint Commission, OSHA, AORN, and AAMI. Use computer-based systems for data analysis, planning, and documentation for efficient supply change. Defines quality management system which assures quality of reprocessing of reusable medical equipment as per VHA Directive 1116 (3). Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a School of Professional Nursing: approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 3-4 years experience of operating Room or 3-4 years of experience from the Sterile Processing Service. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:The full performance level of this vacancy is VN-03. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of VN-01 to VN-03. Registered Nurses: Nurse 2 Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse2 Level II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse 2 Level III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
