Pharmacy Technician serves as a direct assistant to the pharmacist, requiring performance of duties with an understanding of the workflow, the pharmacy routine, and the responsibilities of the pharmacy programs.
Duties
Duties include but not limited to the following:
The incumbent applies knowledge of pharmacy practice, VA regulations, and hospital procedures. Judgment and skill are used to complete technical functions of the inpatient and outpatient parenteral areas and automated machines.
The incumbent will perform duties in the narcotic vault setting and will involve making appropriate record entries, reviewing administration records, and assisting inspectors, review teams, and other staff during routine inquiries and inspections. The incumbent will also perform duties in the Operating Room and will involve filling trays and Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADC's) with non-controls. The incumbent is expected to maintain a high degree of accurate productivity and performance while being extremely sensitive to the specific contribution to total patient care.
Prepares, monitors and analyzes usage reports of narcotic controlled drugs by each nursing unit, taking into account many various factors such as hospital patient census, type of patient on unit, etc. Reports deviations in normal usage to his/her supervisor.
Incumbent is responsible for recording the distribution of narcotic drug products for the hospital. This includes distribution to outpatient pharmacy, nursing units, ADC, Laboratory Service and all other areas of the hospital utilizing narcotic drugs.
Incumbent functions as a resource person to all members of the pharmacy staff, including the Chief, involving matters of narcotic drug control. The incumbent provides training to nurses, pharmacists, physicians, narcotic inspectors, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students and both professional and supportive people on intra VA details at this station involving control and distribution of narcotic drugs.
The incumbent contributes his/her pharmaceutical knowledge to settle any question concerning the identification of narcotic drugs and generic names.
Work requires the highest degree of accuracy, skill, and experience. Incumbent must have advanced knowledge of pharmaceutical and therapeutic agents, and a particularly thorough knowledge of controlled substances, including narcotics. Integrity, reliability, and consistency are imperative.
Incumbent must exercise a high degree of initiative, resourcefulness, judiciousness and integrity, and must establish and maintain good personal relationships with the various sections of the hospital, medical center personnel, and patients.
Keeps exact and detailed records of distribution of narcotic drugs. Reconciles narcotic order forms with delivery record.
Monitors returned green sheets from nursing units.
Works with supervisors to destroy in a timely fashion, according to federal and state laws and regulations, expired and/or otherwise unusable narcotic and controlled drugs. Maintains proper records of this destruction.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English proficiency
PTCB certification
Grade Determinations:
Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities.
Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes.
Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff
Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment.
Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process.
Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures.
Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures.
Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems.

Physical Requirements:
The work requires repetitive motion, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, pushing heavy or bulky carts and at times may be physically demanding, sometimes for extended periods of time.
Must be able to adjust to changing environments.
Must demonstrate the ability to stay on task, to multi-task, and to adapt to the speed of the workflow as required to provide the best customer service possible to the veterans and staff.
